Something that has helped me immensely on my gender journey is learning about trans masculine/gender non conforming and non binary characters in history. Although many of these people were alive decades ago, their experiences and words matched my own internal world so deeply. It touched me to learn that we have in fact, always been here. These 6 photographs represent just a small handful of these incredible queer renegades. Many trans people have been ‘straight washed’ in historical texts meaning that though there is much evidence to suggest these individuals were not CIS (a person whose gender identity corresponds to their sex assigned at birth, i.e., someone who is not transgender) historians have documented them as ‘women’ thus excluding them from trans history. My aim with these photographs is to highlight some of the incredible trans figures I’ve learnt about and solidify them in the trans masc hall of fame where they belong.
